The Feast of the Italian Republic is celebrated on June 2 commemorating the birth of the Republic.
On 2 and June 3 1946 was held, in fact, the referendum held in institutional universal suffrage with which the Italians were called to the polls to comment on what form of government , monarchy or republic , give the country following the fall of fascism . After 85 years of reign , with 12,718,641 votes against 10,718,502 Italy became a republic and the monarchs of the House of Savoy were exiled.
June 2 celebrates the birth of the nation, similar to July 14 French (the anniversary of Bastille Day ) and July 4 U.S. (day in 1776 was signed the declaration of independence).
Worldwide Italian embassies hold a celebration which they invited the heads of state of the host country. From around the world come to the Italian President greetings of the other Heads of State and special ceremonies are held in Italy.
Before the founding of the Republic, the Italian national holiday was the first Sunday in June, the anniversary of the granting of the Statuto Albertino .
By Act March 5, 1977, n.54, mainly because of the economic downturn, the Feast of Republic was moved to the first Sunday in June . Only in 2001 at the instigation of the then President of the Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi , the second government Amato with the Law 336, November 20, 2000, reported June 2 that the celebrations became lively again.
