Which Wire Do I Cross On My Stereo

With Papaleo, Basilicata not want to stop

Nicola Cordone

When you mix together biography and creativity, as lived and experienced personnel are integrated with the optimism of an eye towards tomorrow, when hope for change is combined with respect for and appreciation of their roots, a film can become an effective instrument to affect the reality or at least shed light on aspects of unrecognized, invisible and hidden on the sides, on everything culturally and commonly do not know. Rocco Papaleo Basilicata is a land alive, colorful, inspired, the funny, Young Music: certainly a space designed by the sensitivity of an artist but also the three-dimensional picture of a world that pulsates with life, releases emotions and strong feelings, you know the history and humanity. A world in which we feel clearly the echoes of the economic depression, social and existential, but is very far from the gray and pessimistic representations of literary, film and media of which we have been witness to this day. "If Christ Stopped at Eboli, I do not stop," seems to suggest, between the lines, the neoregista Lucan, overcoming traditionalist rhetoric is only concerned to settle the mood, energy and spirit of a people never placated the forever searching for redemption, understanding and dignity. Lost and forgotten region lunar Basilicata. Home to poets, writers, philosophers, historians and intellectuals. Up where a civilization of the symbolic Eboli Carlo Levi, he began another, far more ancient and universal: that country, whose progress has almost disappeared track.

How do we put today's attitudes towards people of the area? Ties are still strong in the past? It is still the conflictual relationship between modernity and tradition? One thing is certain, judging from coast to coast of Papaleo on foot, accompanied by a horse and cart to following among the barren landscape, sunny, stones and rare green spots: Basilicata is still seeking its identity in the balance between present and past, uncertain future, lives in history and look forward without forgetting their roots. Lucania, osmotic and living reality, asks to be understood in its complexity, does not seem to bear more museological those looks that helped make it a foreign legion, to make it fall into oblivion. Want to grow and evolve, but is proud of its roots, as evidenced by the dialects, the work in the fields, the pagan beliefs and the sanctity of local food. There is degradation, poverty and humility along with dreams and needs of all. There is a land from which they emigrated and then be proud to return. There are men.

So much is who has the courage to tell, who gives voice to the imagination of a generation that grew up in a "lost world", whose memoirs have been delivered mostly to literature and film. Generation is now well within the story. And on it is ready to bet.
